How to Automatically Login Windows 11

Jan 26, 2026

Automatically logging in to Windows 11 can save time on personal or single-user computers as there is no need to go through the sign-in screen at startup. This feature is typically used on home PCs, test machines, kiosks, or virtual machines where the security risk is relatively low. However, for shared or sensitive systems, automatic login is not recommended as it removes an important layer of protection. This article will introduce a reliable method to enable automatic login in Windows 11.

Important Security Warning

Before proceeding, be aware that enabling automatic login means:
  • Anyone with physical access can use your PC without a password.
  • Your Windows account password is stored locally (sometimes in plaintext or reversible form).
  • Full-disk encryption (BitLocker) becomes less effective against casual access.
  • Only use auto-login on devices you fully control.

Steps to auto-login Windows 11

This method works for local accounts and Microsoft accounts.
  • Press Win + R, type netplwiz, and press Enter.
  • In the User Accounts window, select your user account.
  • Uncheck the box of Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer.
  • Click Apply.
  • Enter your Windows account password when prompted.
  • Click OK and restart the computer.

Extra tip

On many Windows 11 systems, Microsoft hides the auto-login option if Windows Hello is enforced. So if the checkbox of netplwiz option is missing on your computer, follow the steps below to fix it.
  • Press Win+I to open the Windows Settings window.
  • Go to Accounts > Sign-in options.
  • Scroll down to Additional settings.
  • Turn off For improved security, only allow Windows Hello sign-in for Microsoft accounts on this device.

Conclusion

When used appropriately, auto-login can streamline startup and improve convenience. Always ensure to balance convenience with security.
