How to Adjust System Restore Point Frequency in Windows 11

Mar 14, 2025

System Restore is a critical feature in Windows 11 that allows users to revert their system to a previous state, undoing changes that might cause instability or errors. By default, Windows creates restore points automatically during significant events like driver installations or Windows updates. However, it doesn’t schedule regular restore points, which can leave gaps in coverage for users who frequently modify their systems. This guide explains how to adjust the frequency of System Restore points in Windows 11 to suit your needs.

Step 1: Open Registry Editor

Press Win + R to open the Run dialog box. Type regedit and press Enter.

Step 2: Navigate to the SystemRestore Registry Key

In the Registry Editor, navigate to the following path:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\SystemRestore

Step 3: Modify the Restore Point Creation Frequency

1. Look for a value named SystemRestorePointCreationFrequency in the right pane.

  • If it does not exist, right-click on an empty space, choose New > DWORD (32-bit) Value, and name it SystemRestorePointCreationFrequency.
Look for a value named SystemRestorePointCreationFrequency
2. Double-click on SystemRestorePointCreationFrequency and set the Value data according to your preferred frequency:
  • Set the value to 0 let system restore never skip creating a new restore point.
  • Alternatively, set a custom time interval in minutes (e.g., 1440 for one per day, 720 for one every 12 hours, etc.).

3. Click OK and close the Registry Editor.

Step 4: Restart Your Computer

To apply the changes, restart your computer. Windows will now follow your modified restore point frequency settings.

Additional Tips for Managing System Restore

  • Manually Create Restore Points: You can always create a restore point manually by searching for Create a restore point in the Start menu and clicking Create in the System Protection tab. You can also use Wise Care 365 to easily create restore points.
  • Manage Disk Usage: Restore points take up disk space. You can configure the maximum space allocated for restore points by adjusting the settings in System Protection.

Conclusion

By adjusting the restore point frequency in Windows 11, you can enhance your system's recovery capabilities while optimizing disk space usage. Modifying the registry settings allows you to have greater control over restore point creation, ensuring that you always have a backup available when needed. Remember to handle registry changes with caution and create a backup before making any modifications.
