How to Use Focus Sessions to Stay Productive in Windows 11

Aug 3, 2026

Notifications interrupt your workflow. Tabs multiply. An hour vanishes before you tackle a single line of real work.

Windows 11 packs a surprisingly capable Pomodoro engine right inside its native Clock app: Focus Sessions. It cuts through system noise, hooks straight into your task manager, and syncs Spotify background audio without forcing you to buy a third-party app.

Here is how to get it running in under a minute.

Set Up Focus Sessions

1. Launch the engine

Press Win + S, search for Clock, and launch it. Head straight to the Focus Sessions tab on the left sidebar.

2. Dial in your focus block

The timer defaults to 30 minutes. Use the + / - controls to set your working block. If you are new to the Pomodoro method, start with 25 or 45 minutes—the sweet spot for deep, uninterrupted execution.

3. Link your task list

Look right below the main timer. Connect your Microsoft To Do account, select your current project, and pick the exact task you are tackling. When the session finishes, checking off your work syncs automatically across your devices.

4. Set background sound (Optional)

Click Connect Spotify to link your account. Select a focus playlist or ambient stream. The volume locks to a low threshold so it stays in the background. Skip this step if you prefer absolute silence.

5. Lock in

Click Start Focus Session.

What Happens During a Session?

The second that timer starts ticking, Windows silently alters your environment:

  • Taskbar badges vanish: No red dots or unread count numbers pulling your eyes down.
  • Notification flashing stops: Apps won't flash orange on your taskbar demanding immediate attention.
  • Do Not Disturb engages: Non-essential pop-ups are suppressed until your timer runs out.

When your time finishes, a chime alerts you to take a mandatory 5-minute break. Grab water, step away from the monitor, then hit repeat.
