Windows 11 collects diagnostic data to help Microsoft improve system stability, security, and performance. While some data collection is necessary for updates and troubleshooting, many users prefer to reduce the amount of information being shared for privacy reasons. In this guide, you’ll learn several safe and effective ways to limit diagnostic log collection in Windows 11.
This method works for Windows 11 Pro, Enterprise, and Education editions. It lets you permanently disable diagnostic data collection at the system policy level.
1. Press Win + R, type gpedit.msc, and press Enter to open Group Policy Editor.
2. In the Local Group Policy Editor, navigate to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Data Collection and Preview Builds.
3. On the right, double-click the policy Limit Diagnostic Log Collection.
4. In the new window, select Enabled and click OK.
If you're using Windows 11 Home (which doesn't include the Group Policy Editor) or simply prefer direct control, you can apply the same rule via the Registry.
1. Press Win + R, type regedit, and press Enter to open Registry Editor.
2. Navigate to the following path:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\DataCollection.
3. If the DataCollection folder doesn't exist, right-click on the Windows folder and choose New > Key, then name it DataCollection.
4. Right-click on the DataCollection key and select New > DWORD (32-bit) Value.
5. Name the new value LimitDiagnosticLogCollection.
6. Double-click the new value, set the Value data to 1, and click OK.
Both Group Policy Editor and Registry Editor offer reliable, permanent ways to limit diagnostic log collection on Windows 11. Either method effectively cuts down unnecessary telemetry and diagnostic logs, safeguards personal privacy, reduces background system data consumption, and will not impact normal daily system operation, app usage, or Windows update functions.
