How to Fix Desktop Icons Suddenly All Spaced Far Apart

Jul 23, 2026

Have your Windows desktop icons suddenly become widely spaced and their selection boxes become much wider? You may also notice that icons that were previously arranged neatly are now separated by large gaps, even though you have not intentionally changed their positions.

The most likely cause is usually related to Windows desktop icon spacing settings, often due to a Windows update, registry modification, or a temporary glitch with Windows Explorer. Fortunately, there are several steps to restore your desktop icons to their normal spacing.

Steps to Restore Windows Desktop Icons Spacing

Step 1. Refresh Desktop Icon View Settings

Right-click an empty area of your desktop, and select View. Enable these items below. If they are enabled, disable them and enable again:

  • Medium icons
  • Auto arrange icons
  • Align icons to grid

Step 2. Check Display Resolution and Scaling

  • Open Settings > System > Display.
  • Under Scale, check whether Windows is using the recommended scaling percentage.
  • If you recently changed other settings here, restore to the previous values.

Step 3. Reset Custom Desktop Icon Spacing

If the problem persists, restore the default icon spacing by editing the IconSpacing and IconVerticalSpacing values in the Registry Editor. These values control the horizontal and vertical spacing between desktop icons:

Warning: Editing the Registry incorrectly can cause system problems. Create a restore point or back up the Registry before making changes.

  • Open Registry Editor by pressing Win + R, and then entering “regedit”.
  • Navigate to the key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\WindowMetrics

  • Look for these two values:

IconSpacing

IconVerticalSpacing

  • Set both their value date to the default, usually -1125.

Step 4. Restart Windows Explorer

Restart Windows Explorer in Task Manager to check whether your icon spacing has returned to normal.

Conclusion

When desktop icons suddenly become spaced far apart, the cause is often a changed display configuration, modified icon spacing values, or a temporary Windows Explorer glitch. By working through these solutions in order, you should be able to restore a more compact and organized desktop without manually repositioning every icon.
