Windows Error Reporting (WER) is a built-in feature that collects information about application crashes, system failures, and other software-related issues. When an error occurs, Windows may generate a report and send diagnostic information to Microsoft to help identify problems and improve system stability.
Although this feature can be useful for troubleshooting, some users may prefer to disable it to reduce background activity or limit the sharing of diagnostic information. This article introduces three methods to disable Windows Error Reporting in Windows 11.
The Services application allows users to manage background services running in Windows. You can disable the Windows Error Reporting Service directly through this utility.
Press Win + R to open the Run dialog box, type services.msc, and press Enter.
Scroll down the list of services and find Windows Error Reporting Service. Double-click it to open its Properties window.
Under the General tab, locate the Startup type drop-down menu and select Disabled. If the service is currently running, click Stop under Service status.
Click Apply and then OK to save the settings. Windows Error Reporting Service will no longer start automatically.
Windows Registry Editor provides another way to control the error reporting feature. By creating a specific registry value, you can disable Windows Error Reporting.
Press Win + R, type regedit, and press Enter. Click Yes if the User Account Control prompt appears.
Copy and paste the path below into the Registry Editor address bar:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Windows Error Reporting
Right-click an empty area in the right pane and select New > DWORD (32-bit) Value. Name the new value Disabled.
Double-click Disabled, set its Value data to 1, and click OK.

For users running Windows 11 Pro, Enterprise, or Education, the Local Group Policy Editor provides an additional way to manage Windows Error Reporting.
Press Win + R, type gpedit.msc, and press Enter.
In the left pane, expand the following folders:
Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Error Reporting
In the right pane, double-click Disable Windows Error Reporting.
Select Enabled and click Apply > OK. This policy setting turns off Windows Error Reporting so that reports are neither collected nor sent to Microsoft.
Windows Error Reporting helps Microsoft collect information about software crashes and system problems, but it is not essential for everyday computer use. If you wish to turn it off, you can follow the methods mentioned above. Keep in mind that disabling error reporting may reduce the diagnostic information available when troubleshooting future problems. If unexpected crashes occur, consider re-enabling the feature to help identify their causes.
